With the council asking for submissions on the stadium, I’m trying to get as much information in front of as many people as possible, so if they do want to make a submission, they can be as informed as possible. Today, a link to a piece from someone far smarter and far more qualified than myself, former parliamentary commissioner for the environment Jan Wright. She makes many good points, including this one:
In just over three months a new council will be elected. The current councillors should not make such a huge decision this close to an election. Rather, they must stop this juggernaut and begin some genuinely open-minded thinking.
Local body elections are coming up soon. This debate should be on the ballot, but those in favour will say “we should just get on with it”. There have already been enough delays, so kick for touch for a few more months shouldn’t be an issue in the greater scheme of things. That way, candidates can go to the electorate and engage with the voters, then come back and reflect that. There are a number of candidates who aren’t even seeking re-election - should a decision this big fall on the shoulders of people who have already decided that they don’t want to serve the people of this city? Or should it wait for some new blood, some people with a bit more passion and drive for the city?
